  WildHorse Canyon Camp

Aka: Washington Family Camp

WHERE IS WILDHORSE? Located in the high desert of Central Oregon and bordered by 10 miles of the beautiful John Day River, this camp consistently gets plenty of hot sunny weather. Ride one of three zip lines that land in the lake! Hike a peak or flip off the blob! Pull a sick off-axis corkscrew from the high dive into the pool. The sports complex is big enough to park a 747; and inside there’s a skate park with foam pit, multiple climbing walls, multiple basketball courts, multiple volleyball courts, multiple game tables, and weight equipment. Try to beat Bill at Frisbee Golf. Winner gets 5 bucks. With a huge pool, lake, lush green playfields and indoor sports complex, there’s plenty to do.

WILDHORSE CANYON HISTORY  Wildhorse Canyon Camp is at the edge of old rock formations, so old that some surrounding hills are actually extinct volcanoes. Petrified wood and fossils can be found.  There is a lot of history too. The nearby town of Dalles was first an Indian city that housed thousands of Native Americans.  The Oregon trail also ended in the Dalles, and stage lines used to run through the area to California. As homesteads failed, they were bought up and consolidated into the “big muddy ranch.” Sheep was the major stock operation, and at one point, more wool left the nearby Shaniko train station than at any other train station in the world. In the 1980s the Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh had a commune at the Big Muddy ranch and it was the largest cult commune in the United States with 5000 people living there. They put in a lot of buildings, and nearly turned it into a small city. Their leaders were indicted in America's first domestic bio-terrorism case. He was finally deported on federal immigration charges in 1984. Many cool and interesting stories later, the ranch is now owned by Young Life and is known as "WildHorse Canyon."     More Ranch History
